Vandeventer Black LLP Partner named College of Commercial Arbitrators Fellow

William “Bill” E. Franczek, a partner at Vandeventer Black LLP, was recently selected as a Fellow of the College of Commercial Arbitrators. Franczek was recognized by the Board of the College for his experience, best practices and contributions to the profession.

Established in 2001, the College of Commercial Arbitrators is a national organization of commercial arbitrators providing a meaningful contribution to the profession, the public and to the businesses and lawyers who depend on commercial arbitration as a primary means of dispute resolution.

“We congratulate Bill on being recognized for this elite honor by such a distinguished group,” said Mike Sterling, Managing Partner. “With his substantial experience as a commercial arbitrator, high ethical standards and standing among his peers, Bill will be an asset in furthering the mission of the College.”

Regionally, nationally and internationally, Franczek handles claim preparation, negotiation, and litigation/arbitration on behalf of construction industry clients.  His experience includes privately-owned projects; federal, state and local public projects, and hybrid developments such as public private partnership projects.

He has also served in leadership roles in many construction trade associations, including: ABA Forum on the Construction Industry, Associated General Contractors, Hampton Roads Builders and Contractors Exchange, Associated Builders and Contractors, and the Design Build Institute of America.

He is a member of the American Arbitration Association’s National and International Construction Panel for arbitrators and mediators, from which he has served across the nation as a neutral in all types of construction disputes.

Thomas Chappell Joins Vandeventer Black’s Maritime Law Department


Vandeventer Black LLP is pleased to announce the addition of W. Thomas Chappell to the firm’s Maritime & Admiralty Law department as an associate attorney. Chappell will focus on maritime-related services, contracts and matters. He will work principally in the firm’s Norfolk office.

“Thomas is a great addition to the firm, and we are pleased he chose to continue his career at Vandeventer Black,” said Mark Coberly, Partner and Maritime Department Manager. “He’s a highly-skilled attorney who will be a great benefit to the clients we work with.”

Before joining Vandeventer Black LLP, Chappell served as a Law Clerk with the office of the Honorable S. Bernard Goodwyn, Supreme Court of Virginia. He graduated magna cum laude from the University of Richmond School of Law in 2014 and received various honors and awards for his academic excellence.

Throughout his academic career, Chappell served as a Clinical Placement Extern for the Honorable Roger Gregory, United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit in Richmond and as the American Bar Association Janet D. Steiger Fellow with the Office of the Attorney General of Virginia (Consumer Protection Section), also in Richmond. He was also a Governor’s Fellow in Governor Robert F. McDonnell’s office.

Chappell is an active member of the Virginia State Bar (VSB No. 87389) and serves on the board of the College of William & Mary Alumni Association, South Hampton Roads Chapter.
