Vandeventer Black moves up to 13th on Virginia’s Largest Law Firms List

Vandeventer Black LLP has moved up to the 13th position on the list of ‘Virginia’s Largest Law Firms’, published by Virginia Lawyers Weekly. The annual survey is based on the number of Virginia-licensed attorneys participating within the Commonwealth. The firm moved up from its position as number 15 in 2016.

Vandeventer Black also ranks as the 15th among the ‘50 Largest Law Firms’ according to Virginia Business Magazine’s 2016 listing.

Mark T. Coberly elected to the Board of Directors of U.S. Maritime Law Association

Vandeventer Black’s partner and head of the Maritime Law Practice Group, Mark T. Coberly, was recently elected to the Board of Directors of the Maritime Law Association of the United States (MLA).  Mark has been active in the MLA since early in his career, and most recently served as Chair of the Fisheries Committee.

“We are proud of Mark’s commendable work and commitment to the Association. He has been a part of the MLA for 35 years, continuing the tradition of past members of our firm who have also served in leadership positions within the MLA,” said Michael L. Sterling, Managing Partner.

Mark has been with Vandeventer Black for more than 35 years. His practice is focused on maritime and transportation matters, including litigation and arbitration. His federal court experience includes major casualties such as collisions, pollution, cargo damage, and serious personal injuries; as well as transactional disputes including charter parties, ship repair contracts, bunker contracts, tariffs and towing agreements. He represents industries that provide services to vessels such as bunker and repair facilities, and terminals.  He also represents domestic marine insurers as well as the P&I Clubs in the International Group and their domestic and foreign vessel operators.

Fortune 100 Company Executive Joins Vandeventer Black LLP

Paul Julius recently joined Vandeventer Black LLP as its new Executive Director and Chief Financial Officer. Julius is a senior financial executive with more than 25 years of management and financial experience.  He previously served as Director of Finance for an international law firm headquartered in New York City. Additionally, he was Chief Financial Officer and Managing Director for a Fortune 100 company in the wealth management and financial services sector.

“Paul’s extensive background as a financial director and law firm manager will play a key role in our firm’s continued success,” said Michael L. Sterling, Managing Partner. “He will provide the leadership necessary to execute the firm’s strategic goals.”

Julius will be responsible for managing Vandeventer Black’s financial activities and the administrative functions of the firm.

Vandeventer Black’s Partner Neil Lowenstein to Serve on DBIA’s Executive Council

Vandeventer Black is pleased to announce the appointment of Neil Lowenstein to the Executive Council of the Design-Build Institute of America, Hampton Road’s Chapter. DBIA’s mission is to achieve and maintain recognition as the industry center of expertise for design-build practice and lead the expansion of design-build utilization across all industries and markets; pursuing that mission in a manner that is inclusive of all project participants in integrated services delivery.

The firm is also pleased to announce Neil’s re-election as Virginia State Bar Council (VSB) representative for the Fourth Judicial Circuit for a three-year term. The VSB Council has general charge of the administration of the affairs of the Virginia State Bar, through elected members within each judicial circuit throughout the Commonwealth, elected by the vote of the active members licensed to practice law in the circuit. Neil was previously chosen by special election.

Neil is a partner that has been with Vandeventer Black since 1989 and, currently, chairs the firm’s Construction and Government Contracts Practice Group. He regularly handles construction related matters, from design through construction, and for the many participants including design professionals, owners, managers, contractors, trade specialist, suppliers, sureties, and end-users. He is a regular lecturer and author involving construction-related matters.

Neil received his undergraduate degree from the Virginia Military Institute and his law degree from the University of Richmond School of Law. His legal honors include having been named a Virginia “Super Lawyer,” one of Virginia’s “Legal Elite,” and one of the “Top Attorneys in Hampton Roads.” He is licensed to practice law in Virginia, North Carolina and the District of Columbia. Ottinger joins Virginia Bar Association Board of Governors

Vandeventer Black LLP Partner Richard Ottinger was recently elected to a three-year term on the Board of Governors of the Virginia Bar Association (VBA).  “I am honored to be elected to the Board of Governors of the association representing the Tidewater Region.  Having the opportunity to serve on the VBA Board of Governors will be an enriching experience.”

Ottinger’s diverse practice includes business and contracts disputes, commercial lease and real estate matters, intellectual property disputes, personal injury, maritime, transportation, products liability defense, as well as creditors’ rights.  Ottinger also serves as a co-chair of the firm’s Government Relations Committee and works on a broad variety of governmental matters.

“We are certain Richard’s work ethic and achievements will translate into great work for the VBA and our community,” said Mike Sterling, Managing Partner.

Ottinger’s achievements include receipt of the Virginia State Bar’s ‘R. Edwin Burnette Jr. Young Lawyer of the Year’ award, the Norfolk & Portsmouth Bar Association’s ‘Walter E. Hoffman Community Service Award’ and the Virginia Bar Association ‘Young Lawyers Division Sandra P. Thompson Award’ for his outstanding and long-term service.
