Vandeventer Black Wins Large Firm (Per Capita) Category in 2018 Virginia Legal Food Frenzy

Vandeventer Black LLP was the top finisher in Virginia in the Large Firm (per capita) category during the 12thannual Legal Food Frenzy. The Firm raised over $15,000 for the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia as well as contributed volunteer hours and non-perishable food.  This is Vandeventer Black’s second consecutive year winning the award.

The law firm was presented “The Chesapeake Bay Blue Crab Award” during the 2018 Legal Food Frenzy Awards Reception in Richmond with Attorney General of Virginia, Mark Herring. The friendly competition encourages law firms, law schools, and government institutions to support foodbanks in Virginia.

Michael Pierce Appointed To The Virginia State Bar Mandatory Continuing Legal Education Board

Vandeventer Black attorney, Michael D. Pierce, was appointed by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Virginia to serve on the Mandatory Continuing Legal Education (MCLE) board. Pierce is an associate at the firm, and his practice includes matters involving labor and employment law, workers’ compensation insurance defense, maritime law, and general litigation.

“I am both humbled and honored to have been selected to serve on the MCLE Board at such an early stage of my legal career.  I will do my best to provide excellent service consistent with the high standards embraced by all the attorneys and staff of Vandeventer Black,” said Pierce.

Pierce defends lawsuits in both state and federal courts. He frequently represents the interests of employers in proceedings before the Virginia Workers’ Compensation Commission and the EEOC. Additionally, Pierce currently sits on the Executive Committee of the South Hampton Roads Bar Association and serves as Treasurer. He is also a member of the Virginia Bar, Old Dominion Bar, and the Norfolk & Portsmouth Bar Associations.

Jennifer L. Eaton Awarded NPBA Walter E. Hoffman Community Service Award

Vandeventer Black attorney Jennifer L. Eaton was recently awarded the prestigious Walter E. Hoffman Community Services Award by the Norfolk & Portsmouth Bar Association. This award is presented annually for outstanding service to the community by a NPBA member under 40 and recognizes hands-on service versus financial contributions. 

“Jenny’s outstanding service to many non-profit organizations within the Hampton Roads community does not go unnoticed. She was recognized as a Millennial On The Move, and she has led the firm’s efforts at fundraising on behalf of the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia, winning the 11th Annual Legal Food Frenzy,” said Michael L. Sterling, Managing Partner. “Jenny is also a member of our firm’s Norfolk Pro Bono Committee and her extraordinary efforts contributed to our firm’s recent award as Pro Bono Law Firm of the Year by Legal Aid of Society of Eastern Virginia.”

Besides giving back to the Foodbank and pro bono legal services, Eaton is a coach for the Norfolk Special Olympics athletes in basketball, soccer, and track & field. She also serves on the local Special Olympics Area 2 Board.

Her practice includes a broad range of general corporate and transactional matters as well as litigation defense. She represents clients with needs in both state and federal court.
