Powers Named Best Lawyers 2014 Admiralty & Maritime Law “Lawyer of the Year”

NORFOLK, VA. Vandeventer Black LLP is pleased to announce that Edward J. Powers has been named The Best Lawyers in America’s ® 2014 Norfolk Admiralty & Maritime Law “Lawyer of the Year.”

Best Lawyers is the oldest and most respected legal peer-review organization in the United States.  Each year Best Lawyers awards one lawyer per practice area per metropolitan zone as “Lawyer of the Year” respectively.  The distinction is made in accordance with the (highest) peer ratings received.

In order to assemble each year’s list of stand-out attorneys, Best Lawyers conducts exhaustive peer-review surveys in which thousands of leading lawyers confidentially evaluate their professional peers.

Powers is a partner at Vandeventer Black’s Norfolk office.  He has practiced maritime law for nearly a quarter of a century; during which period he has handled trials ranging from injuries aboard small fishing vessels to large merchant ship collisions.

Powers concentrates much of his practice in transportation law and litigation,  focusing on the representation of ship owners, charterers, and their underwriters, including both domestic and international insurance companies and P & I Clubs, as well as the representation of one of the largest Class I railroads in North America.

Powers received two B.A. degrees from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and a J.D. from the University of Richmond’s School of Law, where he was Associate Editor for the University of Richmond Law Review. Powers was a Law Clerk for the Honorable Richard B. Kellam, United States District Court Judge, Norfolk Division, from 1990-1991.
