Robert M. McNab, Ph.D.

Professor 

Strome College of Business

Old Dominion University

 

Professor Robert M. McNab currently serves as the Director of the Dragas Center for Economic Analysis and Policy in the Strome College of Business at Old Dominion University. He is a member of the Joint Advisory Board of Economists for the Commonwealth of Virginia and the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia’s Survey of Professional Forecasters. Professor McNab has published over 50 articles and chapters and serves as an Associate Editor with the Journal of Economic Surveys. He is the editor of the award-winning State of the Region: Hampton Roads and State of the Commonwealth annual reports and produces the Dragas Center’s national and Virginia economic forecasts.

Dr. McNab has worked on issues related to the allocation of public resources in more than 30 countries as well as all levels of government in the United States. Some of his recent projects include an analysis of rural mobile broadband for T-Mobile, the economic impact of international imports for the Commonwealth of Virginia, and an analysis of the economic impact of a hurricane on the Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Newport News region. Professor McNab has appeared in the Associated Press, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Richmond Times-Dispatch, Virginian Pilot, and Daily Press as well as television and radio in Virginia. Dr. McNab joined the faculty of the Department of Economics in the Strome College of Business of Old Dominion University in July 2016 and previously was a member of the faculty of the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California from 2000 to 2016. Professor McNab received his Bachelor of Arts from California State University, Stanislaus in 1991 and his Ph.D. in Economics in 2001 from Georgia State University in Atlanta, Georgia.


Clint Minarik

Clint Minarik is the Senior Vice President of Corporate Banking for Dollar Bank’s Virginia Division. This role oversees the Corporate Banking, Commercial Real Estate and Private Banking Departments as well serving as Vice Chair of the Virginia Advisor Board, Voting Member of Loan Committee for Virginia as well as several other committees throughout Dollar Bank. Clint has been in the Hampton Roads market for roughly 9 years serving as a commercial banker with various banks. Prior to moving to Hampton Roads he managed Lower Manhattan for Capital One Bank.

Outside of banking Clint has made and currently holds a number of private investments in Hampton Roads including manufacturing, distribution, hospitality and medical imaging. He also serves on the Executive Committee of Junior Achievement Greater Hampton Roads and is a board member of Future Hampton Roads as well as being involved in various non-profits. Clint is also a proud father, husband and veteran of the United States Marine Corps.

 


Nicholas C. Zagotta

Nicholas is a General Partner of Jackson Lending, LP, which lends directly to small businesses which either choose not to use traditional financing or are unable to secure traditional financing.  He worked for over 25 years as a Corporate and M&A attorney, serving as outside counsel to many small to medium sized business, and worked with those business and other entities on corporate matters ranging from financings and refinancings to mergers, acquisitions, sales, restructurings, employment matters, and litigation.  He has served on many corporate boards, including the Board of Directors of the Chicago Board of Trade and the Board of the Chicago Transit Authority (“CTA”).

While serving as the First Vice-President of the Board of Trustees of The John Marshall Law School in Chicago, Nick was the impetus for the August 16, 2019, merger between John Marshall and the University of Illinois-Chicago which created the first and only public law school in Chicago.  Nick is a  graduate of the University of Notre Dame and of The John Marshall Law School.  He and his wife Kathy have been married for 38 years, have three grown children, and three grandchildren.

Julian Baena received a Masters in Business Administration from Saint Leo University after serving 20 years in the United States Marine Corps. Julian has built his business by working with business owners and sophisticated higher net worth clients on their financial and business planning needs. His service model is based on the personal connection he is able to make with clients of various backgrounds. Julian is the Vice President and Co-Founder of the Legacy Business Advisors Mid-Atlantic through which he offers strategic assistance to individuals and specializes in being a valuable resource for closely held business owners.

Julian is a retired United States Marine whose service included time in the Middle East, Central America, the Caribbean, and Mexico. Julian dedicates his life to living a life of service and is regarded as business leader throughout the community. He is the President of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Coastal Virginia. He also serves on the board of Junior Achievement of Greater Hampton Roads. He is an organizer of 1 Million Cups, Virginia Beach, and serves as an ambassador for the Marine Raider Foundation.

A Director in the Firm’s Transaction Tax practice with over 30 years of experience, David has assisted taxpayers with all aspects of transaction tax matters including optimizing tax attributes, structuring transactions, due diligence, and post-merger integration involving both acquisitions and divestitures.

As a member of the Firm’s Private Equity (“PE”) Services group, he has participated in both domestic and cross-border transactions, and possesses extensive experience with manufacturing and capital intensive businesses, as well as significant tax controversy knowledge involving federal, state income and indirect tax, and foreign local jurisdiction taxes.

David has seven years of Big Four accounting firm experience, and over 20 years of experience directing corporate tax departments of large, acquisitive multinational companies. Before joining Cherry Bekaert, he was vice president of tax at WestRock Company for nearly six years. In his corporate roles, David served as corporate officer and a member of the management team responsible for tax planning, accounting, compliance, and controversy matters.

 


John Richards

John Richards has over 25 years of commercial real estate experience and is a Managing Director of Berkadia’s Hampton Roads Office.  Prior to that he ran the Debt & Structured Finance group for CBRE of Virginia.  He’s an expert in arranging senior debt, mezzanine debt and joint venture equity for a wide variety of income producing properties including multi-family apartment, commercial office, retail, industrial and other properties.   He began his career in the Washington DC area at Bank of America predecessor, Sovran Bank, with responsibilities ranging from loan origination to the management, work out and restructure of the Bank’s troubled asset portfolio.

He has served as a member of Hampton Roads Association of Commercial Real Estate; a former Board Member of the ODU E.V. Williams Center for R/E and Economic Development, a member of the Mortgage Bankers Association’s Mortgage Action Alliance; a member of Virginia Beach United Methodist Church, a Committee Member of Young Life of Virginia Beach; and a panelist and speaker at various Urban Land Institute events.

He earned his Bachelor of Science in Economics and Business Management at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Virginia and has completed several Post-Graduate banking and real estate related courses over his career.


Scott Upton

Mr. Upton is Managing Director and Principal with ICG Capital.  His current responsibilities with ICG cover all aspects of the transaction process from origination to execution of merger and acquisition and private financing transactions. Since founding ICG in 2001, Mr. Upton has executed over $2,000,000,000 in transaction value and over 111 transactions, all on the current ICG platform, a feat matched by few in the Southeast. This is important to note since most firms use past experience with much larger companies.

Mr. Upton has advised on numerous sale assignments, buy-side transactions, private placements and various strategic advisory assignments across a broad range of industries.  Selected industry experience includes discrete manufacturing, business services, building materials and aggregates and metal fabrication and related companies.

Prior to his association with ICG Capital, Mr. Upton managed the Corporate Finance Group for a Southeastern boutique investment bank.  In that capacity he was responsible for all merger and acquisition advisory, private placement and strategic advisory services.  Previously Mr. Upton served as Managing Director of MAI Capital Markets, an investment banking firm focused on mergers and acquisitions in the Financial Institutions market, as well as a variety of other industries.  Clients at MAI included The Money Store, SouthTrust Bank and a variety of regional and commercial mortgage banks.

Mr. Upton is also on several boards – Already Home Care, the Carolina Raptor Center, Convergence Services Group, and System Operations Success International (SOS) Advisory Board – and is involved with other community and civic organizations. Mr. Upton earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Finance from West Virginia University and completed the Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law School. He holds Series 7, 63 and 24 licenses with FINRA.


Tracy Gregorio

As President of G2 Ops, Inc., Tracy Gregorio leads with a focus on quality engineering, technological innovation, and expansion. Her history of working in the information technology and services industries, across diverse business verticals, allows her to provide well-rounded insights across a spectrum of industries. Under Tracy’s leadership, G2 Ops has been awarded prime contracts in systems and security engineering including two SBIR’s in cybersecurity modeling and cybersecurity resiliency. G2 Ops has expanded its offices in Virginia Beach, San Diego, and Arlington within the last year. In 2018, the company was awarded the Patriotic Employer Award from the Office of the Secretary of Defense.

Tracy also focuses on community investment, serving as Cybersecurity Committee Chair of the Virginia Ship Repair Association and on the boards of the Virginia Maritime Association and the ODU Computer Science Department. Tracy most recently served on the Executive Committee of the Commonwealth Cyber Initiative representing industry in Hampton Roads. She holds an M.S. in Computer Science from Old Dominion University and a B.S. in Computer Science from Virginia Tech. Tracy is a recent graduate of the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses Program.
In her free time, she enjoys golfing, boating, and spending time with her family.

Chris joined Virginia Community Capital in 2016 as a Small Business Loan Officer.  As a Community Development Financial Institution, VCC looks to lend to businesses in underserved markets.  Chris is responsible primarily for business development.  He spends his days networking and meeting business owners in the market, looking for those who are a good fit for VCC lending solutions.  Prior to joining VCC, Chris was most recently a Financial Solutions Advisor with Merrill Edge in Suffolk, VA.
